Unheralded death metal heroes from Portugal, Undersave, have been trying to carve their own path and every half a decade or so we get an album that is a huge step ahead from the previous one. And while their previous album is already considered to be a significant one, their new album displays a marked progression from it without completely abandoning the core sound. “Merged in Abstract Perdition” is a masterful album that is at once dark, dissonant, and atmospheric. Having developed such good songwriting skills, they don’t need to rely too much on abstractness or dissonance to get attention; while they navigate similar labyrinthine paths, they do so in an unhurried manner, allowing the riffs to create their own hypnotic crescendo. It is easy to get lost in their world swirling with mesmerizing, dissonant-edged riffs and that is probably the best way to listen to their music – to get immersed in it, just because there is so much in there to absorb. Even then, it will require multiple experiences for the arcane concepts to be fully grasped. Every song is a monolith, outwardly similar but each offering its own twisted interpretation without losing consistency. Undersave may have just come up with a masterpiece with this one, rivalling if not surpassing not only their own albums but also those by the other luminaries in the style.
