They've been refining their craft over the years and integrating elements to enhance their black metal sound. As a result, their music is a homogenous blend of sounds - intense, melodic, atmospheric, even melancholic - that amplify the emotions and that too in a compelling manner. The music is almost never one-dimensional; every song undergoes transformation in varying degrees to contribute something valuable and meaningful to the album. Much like life, it showcases the turmoil, anguish, and even flashes of triumph, emotions that are all too palpable in their delicately arranged and tempered music. "Khamsin" is a striking album of emotional yet understated expression, and one that makes a powerful and lasting impact. There are no 15-min songs on this one; most of them in fact happen to last for just around five minutes and Februus make sure that they're nonetheless packed with plenty of deviations and surprises that are of more varied textures and moods than before. The music on "Construction of Conflict" in that sense is more compact and effective without losing its expressive power - there is so much happening that a normal five minute song feels like it's much, much longer than that. And they're not just crammed in for the sake of diversity; the alternate-dimension parts flow fairly coherently, maintaining the groove and/or momentum, and almost always the section that follows. Februus remain one of the most interesting Swedish death metal bands today, always having a trick or three up their sleeves, while maintaining a deceptively rough, clamorous demeanour. They play death/doom metal that is beautifully balanced, with the proper elements of both the styles getting highlighted at the right moments. The music is immeasurably heavy yet remarkably nuanced, effortlessly carrying expressive ability along with all its ponderous weight. The five songs on this album are a mix of short ones as well as those exceeding 10 minutes, and are rather diverse with each song having its own identity while maintaining an overall cohesive sound. In comparison to the other bands out there, Besotten's music is more structured and fleshed out, amplifying all the best elements of this style, and remaining delectably crushing and foul.
