Canadian death metal band Ignominy unleash dissonant death metal that’s aggressive, punchy and hook-laden, which is rare to find in a style that tends to be more abstract and unpredictable. There is a deliberate structure and coherency in their music which doesn’t restrict their music but in fact aids it and makes it more powerful and memorable. The otherworldly atmosphere that it exudes, emphasised by the two interludes in the middle, is made all the more menacing because of their forceful approach. Ignominy stand out because their music is not only cerebral but also capable of simultaneously exhibiting brute strength. It’s strong, compelling death metal that retains the best qualities while doing justice to the contemporary style. And with the album unravelling, they gradually slide into a more experimentative mode, playing darker, moodier and elevated atmospheric music. ‘Imminent Collapse’ is a remarkable debut full length that manages to find an identity of its own by mangling and mesmerizing listeners at once.
