The music effortlessly oscillates from sharp black metal riffs to pummelling death metal blasts with matching vocal styles, and even toss in a breakdown or two in the middle. It’s something that doesn’t seem to work on paper and yet they manage to make it sound cohesive and convincing enough, with songwriting that's elaborate and well thought out to warrant songs lasting beyond mere novelty quick-listen length. Every song seems like an extension if not an improvisation over the previous one, as the band unfurls dimensions within the sound that they have concocted. Bands playing a mix of styles isn't uncommon but to intermingle influences of such disparate, almost contrasting styles is fascinating and remarkable especially when they have high replay value and lasting appeal. Like it or not, Phasma are here to stay. As accomplished as it is, it also happens to be unique in the style of dissonant death metal - in that, it's deeply personal and palpably emotive, and that poignant, introspective mood pervades their entire album. The music almost has a melodic albeit melancholic quality to it that is refreshing for a style of music that usually sounds harsh and detached. At the same time the music is driven; the hypnotic riffs are invariably interspersed with bursts of blasts and there is good momentum generated in this calculated, undulating pattern which becomes addictive. 'Memories Fragmented' is a beautifully tempered album underpinned by unforgettable melodies, an ambitious release but one completely devoid of pretence, which is bound to be regarded as one of the standout albums in the style in the years to come. It was the timeless kind of black metal that was largely inspired by the classic black metal bands and yet didn't sound too dated. Two years later, the Greeks return with a new opus, elaborating on the music forged on that album, adding better nuance and structure to the songs whilst retaining the sound and appeal. Allowed better expression, the songs are comparatively longer and have a narrative quality to them without straying too far from the core sound. The riffs are drenched in emotions without being overtly melodic as the music marches ahead resolutely with its steely demeanour. This is the kind of black metal that gets its priorities straight - with the right focus on riffs, feeling, intensity, and passion.
