SONG PREMIERE: U.S. Crossover Thrash/Hardcore Band hell bent

hell bent- hell bent

Rhode Island’s hell bent has only been around for about two years, but its members have been a part of bands like Dropdead, Ulcer, and Paindriver and that experience definitely shows.  While they may come from a powerviolence and d-beat background, hell bent takes some of these influences and injects a good deal of crossover thrash and old-school hardcore into the mix.  The group originally released their self-titled EP on cassette last year in very limited quantities, and now they’re reissuing it on another run of cassettes alongside a digital option on January 12th.  Today we’re premiering the song Desert Death Lord so you can discover the raging shot of adrenaline this EP is capable of providing.

SONG PREMIERE: U.S. Doom Band Bestialord

Bestialord- Law of the Burning

Formed last year by ex-Manilla Road bassist Mark Anderson alongside his bandmate Chris Johnson from Sanctus Infernum, Bestialord offers up their version of occult/horror themed doom on their debut full length ‘Law of the Burning’.  While there have been plenty of bands that have fallen into that category in recent years, where Bestialord differs is in their ability to pull in riffs that recall death metal’s earlier days just as much as doom.  It’s a combination that’s drenched in an ominous, gritty atmosphere that feels appropriately old-school without treading too closely to any one particular band.  With ‘Law of the Burning’ due out on January 1st courtesy of Cimmerian Shade Recordings and Symbol of Domination Productions, today we’re premiering the track All Fall Down.

REVIEW+ALBUM STREAM: Mexican Black/Death Metal Band Sacrocurse

Sacrocurse- Gnostic Holocaust

Sacrocurse has been writing some grimy, hellish black/death metal for the past five years, becoming a regular name associated with both Hells Headbangers and Iron Bonehead Productions.  The latter recently released the group’s second full length album ‘Gnostic Holocaust’, which takes the warlike attack of last year’s ‘Destroying Chapels’ EP and takes things to the next level.  With crushing production values and songs that straddle the line between Canadian and South American black/death metal, Sacrocurse’s latest leaves behind nothing but scorched earth.

ALBUM PREMIERE: U.S. Crossover Thrash Band Agony Kings

Agony Kings- Agony Kings

Crossover thrash is one of those genres that doesn’t seem to get covered as often as most of the others out there, though in recent years bands like Power Trip and Iron Reagan have pushed the style back into the public eye.  But there have been plenty of groups trying their hand at the genre for those that want to look beyond the major labels.  One great example of this is New York’s Agony Kings, whose self-titled debut is set for release on October 6th.  While there isn’t a lot of info out there about the band, the promo material for the album says it has been in the works for over ten years and features Mike Stack from fellow New Yorkers False Gods on vocals.  So what’s a crossover thrash album that’s had ten years put into it sound like?  Today we’re excited to bring you a full stream of the record so you can find out for yourself.

VIDEO PREMIERE: U.S. Psychedelic Rock Band Obscured By Clouds

Obscured By Clouds- Thermospheric

One of the best parts of being a music writer is rediscovering bands you wrote about years ago.  This is exactly what happened to me with Seattle’s Obscured By Clouds.  The group’s ‘Psycheclectic’ made a strong impression back in 2009 with its combination of Pink Floyd progressive rock alongside a range of other rock influences.  Eight years have gone by since then, and I was pleasantly surprised to see the band name pop up again in my inbox this past week.  This time around Obscured By Clouds has put together a live album titled ‘Thermospheric’ that will be released alongside a Blu-Ray of the performance.  Containing seven out of the eight songs that were on ‘Psycheclectic’ alongside two new tracks, it’s sure to serve as a great introduction to newcomers and a great way for established fans like me to hear these songs from a new angle.  With ‘Thermospheric’ set for release on October 27th via the band’s own label Psycheclectic Records, today we’re excited to premiere a music video for Consider This A Message.

SONG PREMIERE+ALBUM REVIEW: U.S. Black Metal Band Necrolytic Goat Converter

Necrolytic Goat Converter- Isolated Evolution

When it comes to band names in the metal genre, oftentimes the more outlandish a group is named the more attention they get.  This could certainly work in Necrolytic Goat Converter’s favor, as the one-man project from New York caught my attention for that reason.  On debut full length ‘Isolated Evolution’ (due out August 18th as an independent release), founder Chris Voss blurs the lines between old-school black metal and depressive black metal while adding in a number of other influences.  Today we’re premiering the third song The Dark Within, which showcases a rock/punk swagger mixed in with the abrasive black metal tone.  But don’t just take my word for it, as we have a full review of the album below courtesy of Shrivatsan.  ~Chris Dahlberg

SPECIAL FEATURE: Doom/Sludge Round-Up

One of the great things about the sludge and doom genres is how much variation can be found.  While there are plenty of bands out there beating the same old riffs to death, there are even more putting their own spin on the styles and adding in different influences.  The TO staff has compiled a list of recent releases that stand out, and you’ll find that each one is able to bring something different to the table.  ~Chris Dahlberg

SONG PREMIERE: U.S. Black Metal Band Thonian Horde

Thonian Horde- Inconnu

It’s always interesting to see what bands come up with when their members are comprised of musicians that are primarily known for another style of metal.  Maryland’s Thonian Horde fits this description as its members have all been involved in various parts of the doom/heavy rock spectrum for some time but with this project they’ve turned to black metal.  After releasing a self-titled debut last year the group has readied a follow-up titled ‘Inconnu’, which Grimoire Records will be putting out on September 22nd.  Today we’re premiering the ninth track on the album Organized Oppression, which showcases their ability to deliver raw black metal alongside rock grooves.

VIDEO PREMIERE+INTERVIEW: U.S. Technical/Progressive Death Metal Band NYN

NYN: Of Chaos and Salt

NYN first came to my attention when they released the single The Apory of Existence around the end of June.  While there’s a lot of tech death and progressive death metal out there, this song caught my attention with the sheer amount of things happening.  Highly technical and heavy riffing gave way to soaring keyboards that had a significant prog rock feel, and the vocals spanned everything from high pitched black metal style shrieks to death growls.  It stood out a lot, even considering how much of this material comes my way, and put ‘Entropy: Of Chaos and Salt’ on my radar as a highly anticipated 2017 release.
